Understanding the Differences Between Duotip-Test II and Multi-Test II Devices in Allergy Skin Testing

Allergy symptoms are quite common; in Singapore alone, 1 in 3 people experience allergies, with 24% of the population suffering from allergic rhinitis. While you could avoid the triggers, it isn’t the most feasible solution, especially considering the severity of different types of allergies. Severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, cause hives, swelling in the throat, and a sharp drop in blood pressure, leading to anaphylactic shock or even death. To prevent these risks and improve the overall quality of life, allergy testing is vital.

Allergy skin testing in Singapore is a common method used to identify allergens such as mould, pet dander, bee stings, and certain foods. It is more common than other testing methods, such as blood tests to measure Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and oral food testing under medical supervision, due to its non-invasive nature and quick results. Of course, even within the allergy skin testing method, there are different tools you can use, like the Duotip-Test II and Multi-Test II devices. So, which device has better results overall?

In this article, we will help you understand the allergy skin testing requirements by discussing the main differences between the Duotip-Test II and Multi-Test II and the advantages of using high-quality allergy skin testing devices in clinics.

Which is a Suitable Device for Allergy Skin Testing in Singapore: Duotip-Test II Vs. Multi-Test II

Before we delve into the differences between these testing tools, we need to first understand what skin prick testing is. Allergy skin testing involves exposing the skin to suspected allergens to detect allergic reactions.   A thin needle called a lancet lightly punctures the skin, allowing the allergen extracts to penetrate the skin’s surface. After approximately 15 minutes, there will be visible redness in the skin and raised skin, indicating the suspected allergens have caused a reaction.

The Duotip-Test II and the Multi-Test II by  Lincoln Diagnostics are two skin-prick testing devices that have the same function: to detect allergic reactions. A few ways in which they differ are:

  • Production Output Difference: In comparison to the  Duotip-Test II, the Multi-Test II can test for a wider range of allergens in a single test. This is because it utilises a multi-headed design, enabling simultaneous application of multiple allergen extracts to the skin, whereas the Duotip-Test II only allows for testing one allergen at a time.
  • Differences in Reactions: In a study conducted by Harold S. Nelson, MD, Jennie Lahr, BA, Andrea Buchmeier, BA, and David McCormick, to evaluate skin prick testing devices, it was noted that the reactions to glycerol saline with the MultiTest and Duo Tip prick varied from the Duo Tip twist.  The reactions to the Duo Tip prick were significantly smaller than to the Duo Tip twist.
  • Difference in Pain Levels: Research conducted by In Kyu Yoon, Bryan L. Martin, and Warner W. Carr claims that the pain was greater for multi-headed devices than single-headed devices. Nonetheless, the pain levels for both the Multi-Test II and Duotip-Test II devices are generally mild.

Despite the varying results, it’s always important to consider what your requirements are, as these testing devices offer different potential advantages to the user. Additionally, medical professionals should also look into a reliable distributor to supply their clinics with these products—this is where we at Astromed can help.
